Hosted by the Institute of Sino-German Law of the College, the very first China-Germany Law Exchange was successfully held in Beijing during 7-10 Nov, 2024.
The seminar, which brought together teachers and students from the China University of Political Science and Law, Nanjing University and Tongji University, aimed to further strengthen exchanges and cooperation in the Sino-German legal exchange programme.
The participating teachers and students had dinner together in Beijing on the evening of 7 November. Associate Dean of the College & Dean of the Institute of Sino-German Law Prof. Xie Libin, Deputy Dean of the Institute (German side) Mr. Balduin Benesch, Head of the China Office of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) Mr. Ole Engelhardt, Deputy Director of the Institute of Sino-German Law of Nanjing University A/Prof. Liu Qingwen, (Chinese side), Deputy Director of the Institute (German side) Prof. Knut Benjamin Pißler, Director of the Institute of Sino-German International Economic Law Studies of Tongji University Prof. Gao Xujun and A/Prof. Zhang Taolue form the Tongji University Law School delivered speeches respectively.
The following morning, the Sharing Session of the was held on Haidian Campus. Knut Benjamin Pißler, Xie Libin and Gao Xujun respectively introduced the operation of Sino-German Legal Exchange Programme at the Nanjing University, CUPL and Tongji University and demonstrated in depth the achievements and challenges of the schools in the field of Sino-German legal education cooperation. Subsequently, over 10 participating students delivered an impressive report on a series of issues such as Sino-German legal education comparison and Sino-German data protection comparison. On the afternoon of that day, the students took part in an ice-breaking activity, and the close communication brought the students from different universities together and deepened the friendship between them. Finally, Dr. Florian Kessler, Managing Partner of WZR Law Firm, shared practical experience in contract design. Prof. Wang Qiang, from the School of Foreign Languages of CUPL, gave an academic report on the Comparison of Legal Translation between the German Translation of the Draft Civil Code of the Qing Dynasty and the Terms of the Civil Code of the People's Republic of China to the students.
The students continued to participate in the Competition of Cultural Exchange and Legal Negotiation on 9 November. Each team completed cross-cultural communication, German contract drafting and the tasks of legal negotiations. At the end of the competition, Balduin Benesch summed up the competition, and the award ceremony was held in a fun atmosphere.
The three delegations visited the Summer Palace the next day. The students and teachers walked along Kunming Lake to feel the charm of Beijing in early winter. On the way, they expressed that the three-day event overall had brought them a valuable cross-cultural exchange experience and greatly promoted the cooperation among the law exchange programmes of the three universities. Finally, they took a group photo in front of the Yunhui Yuyu Archway in the Summer Palace. After the visit, delegation of the Nanjing University and Tongji University took CUPL Campus buses to South Station and Beijing Daxing International Airport to leave the city. The China-Germany Law Exchange came to a successful conclusion.
