Hosted by the Institute of Sino-German Law of the College, Chief Legal Officer of Mercedes-Benz (China) Group Mr. Michael Mazart gave a lecture on the Core Competence of Enterprise Legal Consultants to the students on Changping Campus, as the second lecture of Sino-German Law Lecture Series, on the evening of 16 Nov, 2023.

Associate Dean of the College Prof. Xie Libin moderated and interpreted the lecture. At the beginning of the event, Xie introduced Mazart's education background and work experience, so that students have a more in-depth understanding of him.

Mazart shared both the purpose of legal consultants and the competencies required for a good legal consultant. He pointed out that the purposes of legal consultants are to provide companies with solutions, help them make good decisions, investigate internal risks and address external litigation challenges, and then he used a pyramid graph to demonstrate the abilities a good legal consultant needs to possess.

He said, a legal consultant first should master enough solid legal knowledge, which is the foundation of everything. According to him, to be qualified as a legal consultant, one has to learn to cooperate as cooperation is not an ‘attitude' but a skill needs to be learnt. One also has to learn how to communicate that the law people cannot just say things without listening, as visual presentation in the communication process is way more useful than words. Finally, problems could be everywhere and a legal consultant should not expect them to go away but be good at solving them.

During the Q&A session, Mazart patiently and carefully answered the questions the students actively asked, and interacted with them.
