In order to strengthen the work of degree thesis guidance for graduating students and help them better prepare their dissertations, the College organised an online lecture on the Dissertation Guidance on the afternoon of 22 Nov, 2022.
Deputy Dean of the College Prof. Xie Libin gave the lecture with active participation of the graduating students and students of other entering years.
At the beginning of the lecture, Xie Libin took the initiative to ask the students about the progress of dissertation and actively explored the specific situation and problems of their writing, and then he gave a detailed and in-depth introduction and explanation.
Starting from the topic selection of dissertation, Xie pointed out that students should read the professional literature extensively, understand the problems concerned by the academic circle, and select the topics they are interested in. Among them, he stressed that the topic should be suitable to a neutral standpoint and the theme should be a focused one. Subsequently, Xie emphasised the determination of the framework of the paper. He reminded everyone to have a system of thesis ideas that the various parts must have the necessary logical links. Then, Xie comprehensively introduced the determining rules of primary and secondary titles. He pointed out that a higher-level heading was a summary of all the lower-level headings and that the upper-level and lower-level headings must not be repeated; meanwhile, the same-level heading must belong to a unified logical category and must not have a cross-cutting or inclusive relationship. Finally, Xie Libin carried out a systematic and targeted explanation on the writing avoidance, the first draft revision, language expression, writing tools, document preservation, progress and evaluation of outsiders.
In the Q&A Session, the graduating class and non-graduating class students were enthusiastic to speak. They raised questions on paper review, literature collection and topic selection, and Xie answered the question in-detail.
During the over an hour lecture, the students gained a lot from its rich and practical content. Xie Libin's humorous speech style made the relationship between teachers and students closer. In the Q&A session, Xie greatly helped to solve the students' writing problems, providing them with timely and effective guidance during the critical period of their dissertation writing.
